Shower Tile Calculator
A shower isn't a dry floor. This calculator separates the 3 tiled walls (large-format tile, +40% wet-area labor) from the slip-resistant mosaic floor (+60% for slope cuts to the drain), then adds the waterproofing membrane, niche, curb, bench, and drain a real shower needs. For plain floor, wall, or backsplash area by the square foot, use our general Tile Calculator instead.

Shower Walls
Total length of the 3 tiled walls. A 36" × 48" shower has ~9 linear ft.
Floor to ceiling. Standard shower wall is 6-8 ft.
Large-format (12×24, 24×24) needs flatter walls but fewer grout lines.
Denser, water-resistant. Floors, showers, outdoor. Through-body color.
Subtract windows or pre-framed openings. Leave 0 for a standard 3-wall shower.
Shower Floor · mosaic required
Interior shower pan dimensions.
A 36" × 48" pan = 4 ft × 3 ft = 12 sq ft.
Most common shower floor. 2" porcelain or ceramic squares on 12" mesh sheets. Good slip resistance, easy slope grading.Floor tile is forced to 2" mosaic or smaller for slip resistance and to follow the 1/4"/ft slope to the drain.
Waterproofing & Accessories
Membrane $1-2/sq ft + pan liner $100-200 + cement board backer $1.50-2.50/sq ft. The cheapest insurance in tile work.
Each niche adds $50-150 (waterproofing detailing + trim).
Threshold you step over. $20-50/linear ft.
Wood frame + membrane + tile. Structure + waterproofing + tile.
Old tile + backer + disposal. Often hides water damage.
Standard 15%. Use 20% for diagonal layouts or natural stone.
Baseline. Competitive tile labor market.

Prices reflect US national averages. Shower tile is wet-area work and runs 2-3x the per-sq-ft cost of dry-floor tile.
How to Use This Shower Tile Calculator
1. Measure the walls. Add up the length of the 3 tiled walls (the fourth is usually the open side or glass door) and enter the perimeter. Multiply by wall height, then subtract any window or pre-framed niche opening.
2. Size the floor pan.Enter the interior length and width of the shower base. The floor is forced to 2" mosaic - small tile is required for slip resistance and to follow the 1/4" per foot slope to the drain. You cannot use large floor tile here on purpose.
3. Pick the waterproofing system. Leave it ON. The membrane + pan liner + cement board backer is the cheapest insurance in tile work - skipping it saves ~$300-600 up front and causes a $5,000-15,000 leak rebuild within about 5 years.
4. Add accessories. Niches, curb, bench, and demo are itemized so you can see what each adds. A drain assembly ($150-300) is included in every estimate - every shower needs one.
What Makes a Shower Cost 2-3x More Per Square Foot Than a Dry Floor
1. Wet-area labor premium (+40% walls, +60% floor)
Shower walls run +40% over dry-floor labor for waterproofing detailing, corner cuts, and plumbing penetrations. The mosaic floor runs +60% because every piece is small and the floor must slope 1/4" per foot to the drain - that slope is cut into the setting bed, not the tile. A dry 12"×12" floor goes down flat; a shower floor does not.
2. The waterproofing system (non-negotiable)
Grout and tile are not waterproof. The waterproofing layer - membrane ($1-2/sq ft), pan liner ($100-200), cement board backer ($1.50-2.50/sq ft) - is what actually keeps water out of your walls. It's 10-15% of the job cost and the #1 thing contractors cut to win on price. A shower without it is a 5-year timer on a $5,000-15,000 rebuild.
3. Forced mosaic floor (safety + drainage)
A 12"×12" shower floor tile is a slip hazard and can't follow the drain slope without cracking. TCNA wet-area method requires small mosaic (2" or less) so the sheets flex to the slope and grout lines give wet feet grip. This calculator separates floor mosaic material and labor from the walls entirely - they're different products at different prices.
4. Accessories add up fast
A niche isn't a free shelf - it's $50-150 of extra waterproofing and trim. A curb is $20-50/ft. A bench is $200-500 (structure + membrane + tile). A linear drain is $150-300. A shower with 2 niches, a 3-ft curb, a bench, and a linear drain adds $600-1,600 before any tile is set. Itemizing them is how you compare quotes honestly.
5. Demolition and what it hides
Tearing out an old shower runs $300-800 - and old showers frequently hide rotted studs or subfloor behind the tile. A line-item demo cost means the contractor will tell you about water damage before it becomes a surprise change order. A lump-sum quote buries that risk in the total.
Shower Tile Cost Breakdown: What You're Paying For
| Component | % of Total | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tile material (walls + floor mosaic) | 20-30% | Wall tile (ceramic/porcelain/stone) + floor mosaic sheets. Material is a smaller share than a dry floor job because wet-area labor dominates. |
| Labor (setting, cutting, grouting) | 35-45% | Walls at +40% wet-area premium, floor mosaic at +60% (slope cuts + small-piece setting). The single biggest line item. |
| Waterproofing system | 10-15% | Membrane ($1-2/sq ft), pan liner ($100-200), cement board backer ($1.50-2.50/sq ft). Skip this and you'll redo the shower in 5 years. |
| Accessories (niche, curb, bench, drain) | 10-20% | Niche $50-150 each, curb $20-50/ft, bench $200-500, drain assembly $150-300. Adds up fast on a custom shower. |
| Demolition + disposal | 5-10% | Old shower tear-out $300-800. Often hides water damage behind the old wall - budget contingency. |

Red Flags in Contractor Quotes
We've reviewed hundreds of quotes. These are the warning signs that a contractor may cut corners or overcharge:
- No waterproofing membrane in the quote: a contractor who skips the waterproofing layer (Kerdi, CPE pan liner, or liquid membrane) is guaranteeing a future leak. Waterproofing is not optional in a shower - it's the difference between a 20-year shower and a 5-year shower.
- Floor tile larger than 2" × 2": shower floors require small mosaic tile for slip resistance and to follow the 1/4" per foot slope to the drain. A contractor laying 12" × 12" tile on a shower floor is building a slip-and-drainage hazard.
- Labor quote under $15/sq ft for a shower: wet-area tile work at +40-60% premium over dry floors means real shower labor runs $8-$20/sq ft. A suspiciously low quote is skipping waterproofing, substrate prep, or using unlicensed labor.
- No slope to the drain mentioned: a shower floor must slope 1/4" per foot toward the drain (TCNA spec). A flat shower floor puddles, leaks at the curb, and grows mold behind the wall within months.
- Bench or niche with no additional waterproofing: any penetration of the shower wall (niche, bench, plumbing) is a leak path. Each needs its own membrane detailing - a contractor who treats them as free add-ons is skipping the detail work.
- Quote doesn't separate demolition: if demo is buried in a lump sum, you can't see whether they're accounting for hidden water damage. Old showers frequently reveal rotted studs or subfloor - a line-item demo cost means they'll tell you before the surprise becomes a change order.
Stop estimating shower tile by hand.
JobTread turns shower wall + floor measurements into a material order (tile, grout, thinset, membrane, niche kits) and a client bid in minutes. On a 2-shower bathroom remodel, it built the full takeoff - walls, mosaic floor, waterproofing system, accessories - in 8 minutes vs. 45 manually, and flagged a niche count the contractor had under-ordered.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?
Tiling a shower costs $1,500 to $6,500 in 2026, with most homeowners paying around $3,500 for a standard 36" × 48" shower with porcelain walls, mosaic floor, waterproofing, one niche, and a curb. The range is wide because shower tile is wet-area work: walls run +40% over dry-floor labor and the mosaic floor runs +60% because of the 1/4" per foot slope cuts and small-piece setting. Waterproofing membrane ($1-2/sq ft + $100-200 pan liner) is non-negotiable - skipping it saves $300-600 up front and costs $5,000-15,000 in leak repairs within about 5 years.
How is this shower tile calculator different from a regular tile calculator?
A regular tile calculator (like our main Tile Calculator) takes one area in square feet and multiplies by a price - it's built for dry floors, backsplashes, and accent walls. A shower is a wet assembly with multiple surfaces and systems: this calculator separates the 3 walls (perimeter × height, large-format tile, +40% labor) from the floor pan (forced to slip-resistant 2" mosaic, +60% labor for slope cuts), then adds the things a shower actually needs - waterproofing membrane, cement board backer, niche, curb, bench, drain assembly, and old-shower demolition. That's why a shower costs 2-3x more per square foot than the same tile on a dry floor.
How many tiles do I need for shower walls?
Measure the perimeter of the 3 tiled walls (in feet) and multiply by the wall height, then subtract any openings (window, pre-built niche). A 36" × 48" shower has roughly 9 linear feet of wall × 7 ft high = 63 sq ft of wall tile. Add 15% waste for cuts: ~72 sq ft. For 12" × 24" plank tile (2 sq ft per tile), that's 36 tiles, or about 5 boxes (16 sq ft per box). The calculator handles this automatically once you enter perimeter, height, and tile size.
Why does the shower floor need small mosaic tile?
Two reasons, both non-negotiable. First, slip resistance: a wet 12" × 12" floor tile is a skating rink - the grout lines of small 2" mosaic give your feet grip. Second, drainage: a shower floor must slope 1/4" per foot toward the drain (TCNA specification), and large rigid tiles can't follow that curve without cracking or lipping. Small mosaic sheets flex to the slope. This is why the calculator forces the floor to mosaic (2" square, penny round, or hex) and separates it from the wall tile entirely.
Can I skip the waterproofing membrane to save money?
You can, and you'll regret it. Waterproofing membrane (Kerdi, CPE pan liner, or liquid membrane) costs $1-2 per square foot plus $100-200 for the pan liner - roughly $300-600 on a typical shower. Skipping it is the #1 cause of shower failure: water gets through grout and tile (grout is not waterproof), saturates the cement board and studs, and within about 5 years you're tearing out a rotted shower at $5,000-15,000. The membrane is the cheapest insurance in tile work. This calculator defaults waterproofing ON; turning it off triggers a leak warning because the "savings" are borrowed against a future catastrophe.
How much does a shower niche, curb, or bench cost?
A shower niche (recessed shelf in the wall) adds $50-150 each - it's extra waterproofing detailing and trim tile, not just a hole in the wall. A curb (the threshold you step over) runs $20-50 per linear foot. A built-in bench (wood frame + membrane + tile) is $200-500 because it's structure + waterproofing + tile. A drain assembly (linear or center drain + Schluter trim) is $150-300 fixed. These add up: a shower with 2 niches, a 3-ft curb, a bench, and a linear drain adds $600-1,600 before any tile is set.
What waste factor should I use for shower tile?
Use 15% for walls with a straightforward rectangular layout. Use 20% for walls with diagonal or herringbone patterns, or natural stone (higher breakage). The floor mosaic needs only 10-15% because mesh sheets cut cleanly - but keep an extra sheet for future repairs. Always keep 1 full box of wall tile and 1-2 mosaic sheets leftover: discontinued shower tile is impossible to match, and a single cracked tile years later otherwise means retiling the wall.
How long does a shower tile job take?
A standard 36" × 48" shower takes 3-5 working days: day 1 for demo and substrate (cement board + waterproofing), day 2-3 for wall tile setting, day 4 for the floor mosaic + slope, and day 5 for grout, sealing, and trim. Waterproofing membrane needs 24 hours to cure before tile goes over it - a contractor who tiles the same day as waterproofing is cutting the cure time. Add 1-2 days for a bench or custom niche work. Don't use the shower for 48 hours after grout.
Real Project Example
36 × 48 Shower Retile - Porcelain + Mosaic
Austin, TX · 2026
Master bath shower full gut: old 4x4 ceramic + green board removed, new 12x24 porcelain walls, 2-inch square mosaic floor with linear drain, Kerdi membrane, one niche, one bench.
How It Went Down
Demolition + substrate
Tore out old tile, green board, and rotted bottom plate; replaced one stud
$710. Found water damage behind the old shower - the 1990s install had no membrane, only green board, which is not waterproof. The bottom plate was soft.
Waterproofing system
Kerdi membrane on walls, sloped mortar bed + Kerdi pan liner on floor, cement board on non-membrane walls
$580. This is the step the previous installer skipped in 1998. The homeowner understood the $580 was buying 20 years, not tile.
Wall tile + floor mosaic
12x24 porcelain walls in stacked bond, 2-inch square mosaic floor graded to the linear drain
$2,140. Wall labor ran +40% over a dry floor; floor mosaic +60% for the slope cuts. Linear drain let us use larger floor sheets at the drain end.
Niche, bench, curb, drain, grout
One recessed niche, one floating bench, 3-ft curb, linear drain assembly, epoxy grout
$750. Epoxy grout on the floor only - stain-proof and never needs sealing. Cement grout on walls to save $200.
What we learned: The $580 waterproofing system was 14% of the job and the reason the previous shower failed. The 1998 installer used green board - which is water-resistant, not waterproof - and the shower leaked into the wall cavity for years. The rotted stud was a $40 fix during demo; if it had been left another 5 years it would have been a $12,000 structural repair. The membrane is the line item that turns a 5-year shower into a 20-year shower.
