About EstimatorSuite
Marcus Webb
Lead Reviewer & Construction Tech Analyst
Marcus spent 8 years working with general contractors and trade businesses across the US before focusing on construction technology full-time. He's personally tested 30+ estimating and project management tools using real bid data from HVAC, plumbing, and electrical jobs.
His goal: help contractors pick the right software in one visit — not after weeks of demos and dead-end trials. Every review on EstimatorSuite comes from hands-on testing. No PR copy. No sponsored rankings.
Why EstimatorSuite Exists
Picking estimating software shouldn't take weeks. But for most contractors, it does. You sit through demo calls, compare pricing pages, and still aren't sure which one fits your crew.
We do that legwork for you. Our team tests each product hands-on before publishing. We build real estimates, run the mobile apps on-site, and verify every price claim against the vendor's website. No shortcuts.
How We Test Software
Every tool on EstimatorSuite goes through the same standardized test. We don't rely on vendor demos or marketing screenshots. We build real estimates with real numbers — the same way you would.
Our Standardized Test Scenario
We test each estimating software by running the same project through it:
1,500 sq ft residential HVAC install
New 3-ton system with ductwork replacement. Materials: $2,800. Labor: $1,200. Total project: $4,000.
We chose this scenario because it's the most common job size for small trade contractors — the people this site is built for.
What We Measure
| Metric | How We Measure It |
|---|---|
| Estimate Creation Speed | Stopwatch-timed from signup to a complete, send-ready estimate. We compare against a 47-minute baseline in Excel. |
| Template Quality | Does it have a pre-built HVAC (or trade-specific) template ready to use, or do you build from scratch? |
| Mobile Usability | Tested on-site with weak cell signal. Can you view, edit, and send estimates from the field? Does offline mode work? |
| QuickBooks Sync Accuracy | We close a job in the software and check what appears in QuickBooks. Does the invoice match? Are line items intact? |
| Pricing Honesty | Verified against the vendor's current website every month. We flag hidden add-ons, tiered feature gates, and mandatory demo calls. |
Rating System
We score each tool on five dimensions, all on a 1–5 scale:
- Overall — weighted combination of all sub-scores
- Ease of Use — time from signup to first completed estimate
- Features — can it handle our standard scenario end-to-end?
- Value for Money — annual cost calculated for 1, 3, 5, and 10-person teams
- Support — response time to a real support ticket we submit during testing
Price Verification
Every price on EstimatorSuite is checked against the vendor's website monthly. When a vendor changes pricing, we update our data and note the change date. Prices marked "as of July 2026" were verified that month.
If we find a discrepancy between our data and a vendor's current pricing, let us know and we'll fix it within 24 hours.
How We Verify Calculator Formulas
Every calculator on EstimatorSuite follows a three-step verification process. We don't publish a tool until it passes all three.
1. Formula Sourcing
All cost calculations reference publicly available data from:
- HomeAdvisor Cost Guides (updated quarterly)
- Angi (formerly Angie's List) cost data
- U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — material and labor price indexes
- NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) for roofing-specific data
- Remodeling Magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report
2. Cross-Reference
Each number is checked against at least two independent sources before publication. If sources disagree by more than 20%, we use the more conservative (higher) estimate and note the range in the calculator's output.
3. Quarterly Review
Material prices are re-verified every quarter (January, April, July, October). The "Last verified" date on each calculator tells you when the data was last checked. If a calculator shows a date older than 6 months, we flag it for review.
If you spot a number that seems off, email Marcus and we'll re-check within 48 hours.
How We Stay Independent
EstimatorSuite earns commissions through affiliate links. When you click a link and sign up, we may get a referral fee — at no extra cost to you.
This never affects our ratings or recommendations. A lower-rated tool earns the same commission as a top pick. We test independently and publish honest pros and cons — even when the truth isn't flattering.
