How the Math Works
The calculator follows ICPI Tech Spec 2, the industry standard for interlocking concrete pavement bases. Base depth is set by traffic type: 4" for pedestrian (patios, walkways), 6-8" for residential vehicular (driveways), and 8-12" for heavy vehicular (commercial, RVs). The midpoint of each range is used, then adjusted for soil type.
Gravel formula: tons = (area sq ft × base depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.4. The 1.4 factor converts cubic yards of compacted 3/4" minus crushed stone to tons (density ~2,700-3,100 lb/cu yd). Bedding sand is fixed at 1" (ICPI max 1.5") and converted to 60-lb bags at 0.5 cu ft each. Polymeric sand covers ~50 sq ft per 50-lb bag at standard 3mm joints.
Soil adjustment adds 1-2" of base on clay and expansive clay subgrades - these soils hold water and heave in freeze-thaw, so ICPI requires thicker bases to prevent cracking. The calculator applies this automatically.

We've reviewed hundreds of quotes. These are the warning signs that a contractor may cut corners or overcharge:
- Using pea gravel instead of crusher run: Round pea gravel never compacts - it rolls under load. Paver bases require angular 3/4" minus crushed stone with fines that lock together. A pea gravel base fails within 1 year.
- Skipping geotextile fabric on clay: Without fabric separating the subgrade from the base, clay mixes into the gravel under traffic and the base loses structural integrity. Always lay geotextile on clay or expansive subgrades.
- Bedding sand thicker than 1.5": Thick bedding sand compresses unevenly and causes pavers to rock and settle. ICPI Tech Spec 2 caps bedding sand at 1.5" and recommends 1". Thicker sand is a sign the base wasn't screeded level.
- Not compacting in 2" lifts: Plate compactors only compact the top 2-3" of gravel. Dumping 6" of gravel and compacting once leaves the bottom loose. Always compact in 2" lifts with 3-4 passes each.
Common Paver Base Mistakes
Wrong gravel type: The #1 cause of paver failure. Use 3/4" minus crushed stone (crusher run) - angular particles with fines that compact into a solid mass. Pea gravel, river rock, and round stones never lock together and will settle within a year. Verify "minus" (contains fines) when ordering - clean 3/4" stone without fines won't compact either.
Underestimating depth for clay: A 4" base that works on sandy soil will heave and crack on expansive clay within 2 freeze cycles. ICPI requires 1-2" of extra base on clay subgrades. If you're in Texas, Colorado, or the Southeast, assume expansive clay unless a soils test says otherwise - the calculator adds this automatically.
Using the wrong sand: Bedding sand must be ASTM C33 concrete sand (sharp, angular). Playground sand and all-purpose sand have round particles that wash out and shift under load - pavers settle within months. Polymeric sand is for joints only, never as bedding. One wrong sand bag ruins the whole installation.
Skipping the edge restraint: Without plastic or aluminum edge restraints spiked into the base, pavers migrate outward at the edges and the surface unravels. Install restraints before the bedding sand - nailing them into loose sand does nothing. Budget $2-$4 per linear foot for restraints.

How much gravel do I need for a paver base?
Calculate gravel for a paver base in three steps: (1) multiply area length × width in feet to get square footage, (2) multiply square footage × base depth in inches ÷ 12 to get cubic feet, then ÷ 27 for cubic yards, (3) multiply cubic yards × 1.4 to convert to tons (crushed stone density). Example: a 10'×10' patio (100 sq ft) with a 4" base needs 100 × 4 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards, or about 1.7 tons of gravel. Order 10-15% extra for compaction and uneven subgrade - the calculator above includes this in its tonnage. Use 3/4" minus or crusher run, not pea gravel (it doesn't compact).
How thick should bedding sand be under pavers?
Bedding sand under pavers must be exactly 1 inch thick after screeding, per ICPI Tech Spec 2. Never exceed 1.5 inches - thicker bedding sand compresses unevenly under load and causes pavers to settle and rock within months. Use ASTM C33 concrete sand (sharp, angular particles), not playground sand or all-purpose sand (round particles wash out and shift). The 1-inch bedding layer is a leveling layer, not part of the structural base - the structural support comes from the compacted gravel base below. The calculator above uses the fixed 1-inch ICPI standard and converts it to 60-lb sand bags automatically.
Do I need a thicker paver base for clay soil?
Yes. Clay and expansive clay soils hold water and expand/contract with moisture changes, so ICPI requires adding 1 to 2 inches of extra base material on top of the standard depth. For moderate clay, add 1 inch; for high-plasticity expansive clay (common in Texas, Colorado, and the Southeast), add 2 inches. A patio that needs 4" on stable sandy soil needs 5-6" on clay. Without the extra base, clay heave will crack and lift pavers within 1-2 freeze cycles. How many bags of sand do I need for pavers?
For bedding sand (the 1-inch layer under pavers): divide your square footage by 24 to get 60-lb bags. A 100 sq ft patio needs about 4 cubic feet of bedding sand, or 8 bags (each 60-lb bag yields roughly 0.5 cubic feet). For polymeric sand (the joint filler between pavers): one 50-lb bag covers about 50 sq ft of standard 4"×8" pavers with 3mm joints, so a 100 sq ft patio needs 2 bags.
